Viral videos: The Edge goes off the edge and more

15 May 2015

This week in viral videos: David Cameron celebrates victory with ‘cool’ strut, real jetpacks fly in Dubai and The Edge does what he does best.

About 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute, 500 years of video watched on Facebook every day, and more than 700 YouTube videos shared on Twitter each minute, ensuring there is always video trending on the web.

With so much video available for viewing, we take a look at some of the viral videos that have caught our eye this week.

David Cameron does the Spidey strut

Take a bow, Huw Parkinson.

With a country’s media in mourning over the landslide election win of the Conservative Party in the UK, Huw has put into video what Cameron must be thinking his life should be like every day.

Using hilariously-bad scenes from Spiderman 3 of Tobey Maguire looking like a total berk as a cool Peter Parker, Huw has cut some of Cameron’s victory speeches and almost effortlessly inserted them…

It’s worth it alone for the final scene…

Jet packs in Dubai

Well it’s about time! After years of watching science fiction films, flying around in jet packs may be a lot closer to reality after jetman Yves Rossy and his protégé Vince Reffet took to the skies of Dubai in honest-to-goodness jetpacks.

As Rossy says, the pair come from two different worlds, with him being a pilot with 10,000 flying hours and Reffet having 15,000 parachute jumps under his belt.

Kudos to the camera crew too for capturing some amazing shots of the city, including the infamous palm tree peninsulas and homes of the rich below.

U2’s The Edge falls off stage

It’s almost as if it had to have happened eventually. Perennial guitar plucker The Edge joined the list of U2 members who keep getting in to accidents.

Playing in Vancouver as part of their Innocence and Experience Tour, The Edge appears to casually walk down the catwalk playing away, failing to realise not walking in a straight line on a catwalk is a very bad idea.

Unlike Bono, however, The Edge was not badly injured and didn’t find himself on the end of a video of the calibre of Kelsey Grammer’s fall during a talk all those years ago. “Oh dear lord!”

Everything wrong with YouTube social experiments

Another fine breakdown of some of the latest trends that make you question the existence of the internet with Peter and Chris.

This week it’s the turn of social experiments on YouTube, which are really just an attempt to garner views, pluck the heart strings and shoehorn in some pretty racist stuff.

“We’ve a new favourite way to make stacks of cash on the internet while being manipulative d***heads”, says Chris.

Hey football fans, don’t do this

For Toronto’s CityNews reporter Shauna Hunt, enough was enough when it came to drunken guys shouting insults at her at football matches.

Asking fans’ opinions outside the grounds of Toronto FC’s stadium, Hunt decided that she was going to challenge the guy who shouted an obscenity at her.

The last guy clearly doesn’t understand the internet doesn’t forget.

Rick and Morty kill The Simpsons

Fans of The Simpsons celebrated the news this week that the show could finally be put out of its misery after Harry Shearer, voice of Mr Burns, Ned Flanders et al, has been let go from the show.

In the meantime, the show continues to cling on to its survival with regular guest spots and couch gags to take advantage of viral videos, knowing that no one actually watches the show anymore.

So this week, Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty stepped in to kill The Simpsons in a new couch gag. Now they just need to make the demise final, for The Simpsons’ sake.

Baby geese use trampolines to jump off roof

University of Calgary, take a bow.

With baby geese in the area regularly jumping off the roof of the university to their grizzly demise, they took the decision to save the adorable little fellows by constructing a crash pad at ground level so that they could jump to safety and enjoy themselves at the same time.

Workers at the university spotted the goslings stranded on the roof and moved the crash pads over to help.

Good job!
