Prof Jane Ohlmeyer, chair of the Irish Research Council, sums up the major challenges and opportunities facing Irish research.
Of the challenges facing the Irish research community, Prof Jane Ohlmeyer sees three: finance, balance and interdisciplinarity.
Funding, used correctly, can help to address the remaining issues. For example, the Irish Research Council wants to tackle the imbalance of investment that favours applied research over frontier research.
She also sees funding as an opportunity to improve the infrastructure of Ireland’s research ecosystem, and set the country up as a research destination for talent from around the world.
