Researchers from the ROCSAFE project and the Irish Defence Forces showcase the latest in disaster response AI, drones and robotics.

While sending a robot in to a hazardous environment to dispose of a bomb, for example, might be nothing new, the technology behind it has gotten significantly more sophisticated.

One group working in this area is ROCSAFE, an EU project coordinated by NUI Galway and led by Prof Michael Madden, which uses the latest AI, drones and robotics to prevent human forensic scientists from getting in harm’s way.

It recently held an exercise performed by specialised civilian operators and members of the Irish Defence Forces, who would typically be first responders to chemical, biological, and radiological or nuclear incidents.
