We talk a lot here about tech sector growth and the attendant jobs that come with it. Sometimes, though, even we’re surprised by the numbers.
After a whopping July, in which 1,500 jobs were announced, August has started off strong. In the first week of the month, we’ve already seen an absolutely incredible 979 jobs announced.
Not all of these were in Ireland, but they did all show massive successes for Irish businesses. The largest announcement by far saw 500 new roles in the US created by Cork company Voxpro.
Other big announcements came from Tullett Prebon, SiteMinder and Jazz, with smaller announcements from Big Red Cloud and Payescape rounding out the offering.
Those 979 jobs should be reassuring to anyone interested in a career in tech, like those who are this week embarking on the inaugural Teen-Turn programme – an initiative that provides girls from DEIS schools with internships at some of Ireland’s leading tech companies. It is hoped that Teen-Turn will “create a new generation of female role models for tech”.

Aisling, a talent recruitment specialist at PayPal, has recently returned from her climb to the top of Kilimanjaro, an epic 6km above the surrounding plains. She told us her story.
And Paul Sheridan, a senior layout engineer at Cork-based internet of things company U-blox, talked to us about the Tour de Munster, a 600km cycle he started to raise money for charity.
