78pc of engineers confident about company prospects – survey

2 Mar 2012

Seventy-eight per cent of engineers are confident about their organisation’s prospects this year, a survey from Engineers Ireland as part of Engineers Week 2012 suggests.

Today marks the end of 120 open day organised tours of offices and plants this week as part of Engineers Week 2012. Tours were held in companies such as Dell, MSD, Jennings O’Donovan and Medatronic Galway.

The finding was revealed as part of a visit by Ireland’s Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton to the Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics plant in Swords, Dublin.

“Engineering will play a crucial role in this Government’s plan to rebuild the economy and create sustainable, enterprise-led growth,” said Bruton.

“The Action Plan for Jobs targets 20,000 net extra jobs in manufacturing by 2016, and many of the high-growth sectors identified as key to our future growth will depend on engineers – in particular, health/life sciences, the green economy and ICT.

“Today’s events showcase the cutting-edge engineering-led enterprises which are in operation in a range of sectors across the country, and demonstrate that these sectors are where much of our economic future lies.

“I am determined that, by implementing the ambitious measures contained in Action Plan for Jobs, we can take advantage of the major jobs potential offered in these sectors and get sustainable growth going again,” he said.

Director general of Engineers Ireland John Power said Ireland continues to offer “great opportunities” to graduates with the right technical skills.

“Last year, ICT Ireland estimated an average of 80 jobs per week were created between January and October by indigenous or multinational technology firms based in Ireland, an increase of some 33pc on 2010,” said Power.

“Engineering vacancies were also one of the most frequently advertised professions in 2011 and with 78pc of engineers in our survey expressing confidence about their organisation’s prospects this year, it is clear where graduates have scope to forge dynamic and exciting careers,” he said.
