17 jobs you can get in the e-sports industry

23 Jun 2017

With competitive gaming on the rise, the e-sports industry is thriving, and there are plenty of avenues for you to pursue if you’re interested.

With technology bleeding into all parts of society, it was only a matter of time before the technological advancements in gaming and the competitive spirit of sports came together.

The e-sports industry has been growing steadily over the last number of years. In April of this year, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) revealed that e-sports will be introduced to the games in Indonesia next year as a demonstration sport, before full introduction in 2022.

Future Human

Earlier this year, our editor John Kennedy spoke to Kilkenny-based entrepreneur Trevor Keane, the founder of sports fan engagement company Sportego and mastermind behind the the Celtic eSports League.

All of this is just scratching the surface of the multimillion-dollar industry, and, with those dollars, comes employment.

But, for gamers and sports addicts alike, what kind of careers can they get in the e-sports industry?

If you’re interested in going behind the scenes of e-sports, there are a number of technical and management roles available.

Have an eye for good design? Booth and stage planning gets technical when it comes to e-sports, so experience in Photoshop and cinema 4D experience will be important here.

Execution and development of proper e-sports events will require someone with event management experience.

If your interest in e-sports is in the gaming side of things, why not pursue a role as a tester? You will need plenty of experience in quality assurance – the more you have, the higher your salary will climb.

There are also plenty of game design, animation and motion graphics jobs available within the industry.

If you want to be on the other side of the stage, there are even more roles, from e-sports commentators and reporters, to team coaches.
