The majority (75pc) of hiring managers in the IT sector in Ireland are expecting basic salaries in their business to remain the same over the next year, while 17pc think they will increase and 8pc believe they will fall, according to a telephone survey carried out by Premier Group in April 2010 as part of its annual salary guide.
“There are still very good opportunities in software development and salaries have held up very well for talented professionals in this area,” said Brian Murphy, CEO, Premier Group Ireland. “However, the increased popularity of cloud computing in the workplace means that those with infrastructure expertise have been less in demand than in previous years and remuneration packages have started to reflect this.”
“The IT sector in 2010 has continued to grow steadily following a positive end to 2009,” said Gráinne Bagnall, manager, Verkom Dublin (Premier Group’s IT recruitment business), adding that the number of vacancies in January 2010 was four times that of January 2009.
“The financial services sector plays a key role in the Irish economy and particularly in the IT contract market, but has remained stagnant for the last 12–18 months from a recruitment perspective,” she said. “We are now experiencing a change and companies have started to hire but on a much smaller scale. We can conclude that companies are slowly returning to a more stable level of business activity. As a result this is influencing the overall sentiment within the Irish jobs market.”
