‘Version 1 provided a clear training path for me,’ says graduate

16 Nov 2016

Mark Kelly had never worked in the IT sector before coming to Version 1. The graduate programme’s focus on training is what drew him to the company after his studies.

What did you study in college?

I graduated from Dublin City University with a BSc in multimedia in 2008. In 2015, I completed a higher diploma in science in computing at Dublin Business School (DBS).

With this programme, are you now working in your desired industry?

Yes – I specialised in cloud computing and am currently working between the Oracle Cloud and AWS teams.

What drew you to this company when you were seeking work as a graduate?

Having never worked in the IT industry, I was looking for a company who emphasised the importance of training. Version 1 provided a clear training path to build on the foundations I had learned while at DBS.

What expectations did you have before you began the programme?

I expected to be brought through an induction programme, which would sufficiently prepare me for working on complex projects.

What duties and responsibilities were you given initially?

After joining the cloud team, I was immediately asked to build and support a POC web application, which would migrate on premise databases to the cloud.

Did the scope of your work change as the programme progressed?

Yes – once the POC implementation was complete, my focused changed completely. Subsequent projects I worked on included various pre-sales tenders, engaging with clients on best practices when moving to the cloud, while also building infrastructure solutions in the cloud.

Can you describe a typical day in your role?

My role as a cloud consultant offers great variety; I could be providing cloud consultation services to a client in the morning, followed by implementing a technical cloud solution in the afternoon. We try and remain cloud agnostic, which requires an in-depth understanding of both the commonalities and differences between the various cloud providers.

How do your responsibilities compare to more experienced employees?

While my superiors will undertake the initial client engagement, I will be brought in on subsequent consultations to provide technical details on how various solutions will be implemented.

Do you feel more prepared for working life after completing this programme?

Yes.

Why should someone apply to the graduate programme at this company?

Version 1 provides a broad range of IT services and so will try to align you to a team that best fits your interests and skills.

Version 1 are now hiring recent graduates in Ireland and the UK for its 2017 IT SuperGrad Programme. See ITSuperGrads.com for more details and to apply.
