Copan stages smartphone-based treasure hunt around Dublin

23 Nov 2010

Copan the Game, a new Irish e-marketing initiative for the opening Copan venue, lets users scour to the streets of Dublin using augmented reality technology on their smartphone to find prizes.

The game, loosely based on Mayan culture, opens on 30 November and for one week players can use QR codes, augmented reality and GPS technology to navigate the real world to find virtual tombs and hidden treasure.

Players can earn points by completing challenges at each location. Prizes up for grabs include iPads, laptops and TVs.

At the end of the game on 8 December, the top 50 scoring players will get an invite to the opening of the Copan Bar in Rathmines, Dublin. The top 10 players will win significant prizes, including a top prize of an all-expenses paid holiday for two to South America.

The project is running in conjunction with numerous organisations, including 98FM, who will give hints as to treasure chest locations in order for players to get there first and get the most points.

Players can sign up for the game at the website and will need a QR code app and an augmented reality app on an iPhone or Android device to play.
