Rovio confirmed it is working on a film version of its hugely popular mobile game Angry Birds, with former Marvel Studios chairman leading the project.

The BBC reports that Rovio North America recently hired David Maisel, former chairman of Marvel Studios, to lead the creation of the movie.

It also acquired Finnish animation company Kombo in June to help it create “a world-class powerhouse in animated entertainment.” It’s currently working on a number of short Angry Birds videos to be release next year.

The mobile game has seen huge success and Rovio’s North American general manager Andrew Stalbow revealed the game has been downloaded 400m times.

The company could also be valued at US$1.2bn and its chief marketing officer Peter Vesterbacka said Rovio could start trading publicly from next year.

Ten to 20pc of its business is in merchandising and Vesterbacka said it sells a million Angry Birds toys a month.
