Live weather map is the definition of beautiful data

16 Dec 2014

A new, beautiful live global weather map called Windyty is attempting to create the most detailed map available to the public charting various atmospheric changes down as far as a local scale.

Coded and developed by Cameron Beccario, the map technology is based upon NMM Nonhydrostatic Meso-Scale Modelling (NMM) technology which creates calculations based on ‘domains’ made up of large areas covering parts of or the entire continents.

Ivo, the founder of the Windyty project says on his website that he re-wrote Beccario’s code to make it faster and better optimised, all of which is taken into account to use live Meteoblue weather data including wind speed, temperature, air pressure, cloud density and humidity and is updated four times a day.

Describing his reasoning for creating the incredible looking project, Ivo says it was born of his two passions: adventure and coding, “I am an addicted kiter, helicopter and jet pilot, who seeks the wind, waves, METARs, TAFs and powder snow almost constantly. Since programming is my passion I coded Windyty.com as my pet project.”

For local weather information, typing a location, taking Dublin as an example, will show much greater detail with different weather data being available for viewing as well as the ability to look at local live webcams streaming various locations across the city to get a visual feel for what the weather looks like.
