Some 794,000 jobs are supported by the European app economy, a study of 28 countries has revealed, of which 529,000 are direct app economy jobs with 60pc working as software developers.
The study of the European app economy by VisionMobile and Plum Consulting, sponsored by ACT4Apps, found that the app economy generates more than €10bn in revenues.
The European app economy produces more than a fifth of all apps in the world – 22pc – across platforms ranging from Apple, to Google, Microsoft, BlackBerry, Amazon and others.
Downloads of applications in Europe total around 100bn, with nearly 1m apps available across the various app stores.
The report’s authors say this is only the beginning as faster 4G networks come on stream and in effect will boost the socio-economic opportunities associated with supporting the various app ecosystems.
“The current state of connectivity and apps can be likened to the pre-broadband fixed internet era. In parts of Europe, wireless coverage is patchy with variable-to-poor service quality. LTE (4G) with additional spectrum is changing this while offering lower costs per bit carried and enhancing the potential of the App Economy through ubiquitous connectivity and cloud services,” the report’s authors said.
