Educational start-up Lingle gets major European innovation award

NDRC spin-out LingleOnline’s technology has been named ‘Language Technology Innovation 2012’ at the prestigious LT-Innovate Summit in Brussels.

LT-Innovate gathers top executives of European companies involved in developing products using speech, translation or intelligent content technology.

Lingle is an innovative technology that allows English-language teachers to automatically generate exercises, lesson and resource materials from current news articles.

“We are delighted to have received such a prestigious award and to have been recognised as a new, innovative technology provider that can help teachers achieve their goals and remove barriers from implementing best teaching practice,” said Ian Butler, CEO of LingleOnline.

“The award will enable us to take the next step forward in bringing our product to market and, along with our recent collaboration with the British-Irish Council, we feel confident that LingleOnline will continue to grow.”

Boosting learner motivation

Use of authentic text increases learner motivation, exposes learners to more diverse vocabulary and wider grammar rule use. It also provides contextual examples in multiple domains, ensures exposure to the latest vocabulary and its content has a general educational value all of which leads to an improved learning experience.

Lingle lets teachers and trainers automatically create English-language learning materials from current news sources. The company’s analysis engine allows teachers to analyse news articles to automatically identify grammar and vocabulary in context.

The NDRC announced in October it had secured commercial investments of €4.8m in NDRC-backed technologies and ventures.

NDRC CEO Ben Hurley congratulated Lingle. “The aim of NDRC is to turn research ideas into viable product offerings and this award for Lingle demonstrates the quality of commercial offerings coming on stream.

“We will continue to co-create and work with the best digital start-ups and technologies, such as Lingle, bringing them to the attention of the investment community and ensuring that they are market ready.”
