Irish firm integrates Google enterprise search

Dublin-based PTools Software is to integrate Google’s enterprise search appliance with its content management technology to allow users to browse intranet and extranet systems.

As well as providing Google’s enterprise search appliance directly with its software, PTools will customise the Google technology to integrate functionality within its content management software to develop specialised elements for customers around e-government, security and usability.

PTools, which is headed by founder and managing director Tom Skinner, has been in business since 1997 and has sold content management technology to corporate and government customers that include the Department of the Taoiseach, AXA Insurance and Strathclyde Police in the UK.

The Google enterprise search appliance has most recently been put in place as part of a new intranet deployment of PTools software for the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.

Skinner commented: “The enterprise functionality delivered through the Google search appliance will greatly enhance the already highly structured information delivered by the PTools content management software. Also our customers will be able to easily use the Google product and we believe results will be immediate and clearly beneficial.

“Search technology is an essential element of any significant content management deployment and we are excited to be working with the best in the business,” Skinner said of the Google deal.

PTools’ enterprise content management software enables organisations to deploy scalable intranet and extranet systems that are designed to improve operational efficiency and reduce the cost of traditional paper-based business processes.

The technology also helps communication and collaboration between different teams within a customer organisation and develops an intuitive interface that enhances information exchange in a way that is manageable, measurable and reliable.

A briefing on the Google enterprise search appliance will take place at a session hosted by PTools and Dutch knowledge management firm Cibit Consulting on 20 September at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin.
