Vodafone, the largest mobile operator in Ireland, is seeking 130 redundancies – 10pc of its workforce – as part of a cost-cutting exercise aimed at making the business more flexible for the years ahead.
The company has entered into a consultation process with staff and trade unions that will conclude next month.
Vodafone aims to achieve the cost cuts through voluntary layoffs and early retirement.
It is understood the move is aimed at protecting the viability of the company in the face of a stressed telecoms market that has declined 7pc in the past year.
“Given the significant deterioration in the market, the decline in consumer spending and the impact this has had across the telecoms industry, we have had to review all costs within our business to ensure we’re operating efficiently and delivering good value to our customers,” Vodafone HR director Francesco Bianco said in a statement.
“We believe that these reductions can be achieved through voluntary redundancy and early retirement and remain committed to engaging with our employees and providing as much help and support as is necessary throughout this process,” Bianco said.
