Users who want to download less data and who have to use Facebook in areas of poor network coverage have had their prayers answered.
Facebook has begun rolling out a new Facebook Lite Android app that consumes less data and works well even on slow networks.
Aimed primarily at the developing world, the app will be released across Europe, Asia, Africa and parts of Latin America in the coming weeks.
The app is less than 1MB to install and provides core services like News Feed, status updates, photos, notifications and more.
Facebook said that more than 1bn people around the world access Facebook from a range of mobie devices. However, in many areas, networks can be slow and unable to support all the functionality.

The new app will give users a reliable Facebook experience where bandwidth is at a minimum.
“We just launched Facebook Lite, a new app designed to serve people a faster experience on slower mobile networks and Android phones around the world,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg said.
“We built Facebook Lite to be faster, more reliable and very data efficient even when internet bandwidth is at a minimum. The app is less than 1MB in size and takes just a few seconds to download.
“We’re starting to roll out Facebook Lite across Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe, and it will be available in the Play store. We’re going to keep working to serve the entire world, and we’ll keep building tools for people in every community until we’re all connected,” Zuckerberg siaid.
