Open source specialist Red Hat is pumping €12.7m into its Waterford offices, aiming to offer 60 new roles over the next three years.
Red Hat’s global hub for research and development in Waterford is due an upgrade, after multimillion-euro plans emerged from the US company.
With €12.7m to invest, the open source software provider is opening a new office at the hub, which Dr Mícheál Ó Foghlú, CTO of Red Hat Mobile, credits to the local staff’s hard work since the company entered Ireland in 2014.
Headquartered in North Carolina, Red Hat was established in 1993 and employs more than 10,000 people worldwide.
“The opening of this new office, and the announcement of the investment, is the result of significant work by all of the staff here in Waterford, most of whom are working on challenging new mobile technologies,” said Ó Foghlú.
“We look forward to taking our place as a key pillar in the information technology landscape in the region.”
The company develops open source technologies in areas that include containers, messaging, big data, real-time computing, middleware, management, mobile, security and identity.
“It is great to see Red Hat develop its Waterford office as a strategic site by adding this project,” said IDA Ireland CEO Martin Shanahan.
“Waterford has a growing software engineering base and this decision by Red Hat, a global software leader, to locate this project here is another excellent endorsement of the region as a prime location for other technology companies to invest in. I wish the company every success with this project.”
This is the second major jobs announcement of the week, following the news that Mercury Filmworks, one of Canada’s most prolific animation studios, is joining forces with Kilkenny’s Cartoon Saloon in a move that will create 140 jobs in the next three years at Lighthouse Studios.
The plan is to create an all-new 2D-focused animation studio. In the coming weeks, Lighthouse Studios plans to announce development and production projects, as well as a hiring initiative that will encompass production management, designers, animators, effects artists, compositors, technical directors, 3D modellers, riggers, lighting and texture artists, and IT administrators.
