Photo-bombed – Fiat pranks Volkswagen on Google Street View

16 May 2012

Feisty Italian car manufacturer Fiat has scored bragging rights against German car manufacturer Volkswagen by placing a Fiat 500 outside the front door of Volkswagen’s Swedish HQ in Södertälje just as Google’s Street View cars were passing by.

The move signals a new kind of brand warfare that has broken out on Google Maps and no doubt has sent blood pressure levels soaring at Volkswagen HQ.

It seems that until Google refreshes its Street View data the photo will remain on Google Maps for at least another year.

It does raise the question though, of how did Fiat get wind of the fact Google Street View’s cars were en route?

Was it a spur-of-the-moment opportunity seized? I guess we’ll never know, but I’m sure the peeps at Volkswagen are preparing a special response.
