IT and cybersecurity leader Bill McCluggage explains the importance of understanding cybersecurity, even for non-tech leaders.

While cybersecurity can seem like an area best left to the tech team, Bill McCluggage argues that board members also need to have an understanding of the topic.

Speaking to Ann O’Dea as part of our Future Human series, the former Irish Government CIO and UK government deputy CIO said it’s not about becoming a specialist but about knowing the right questions to ask.

“Just like financial due diligence, when it comes to cybersecurity governance and risk governance you want to be able to go in and see that things have been done and milestones have been met, and patching is occurring,” he said.

“You don’t need to understand necessarily what it is that’s happening but you do need to know that it’s providing you with that specialist capability that’s inside your business to defend yourself.”
