Yahoo CISO Sean Zadig spoke to about who the tech company looks for when hiring for its cybersecurity team.

While experience and certain technical skills are an advantage when looking for a job in cybersecurity, they’re not the be all and end all.

In fact, Yahoo chief information security officer Sean Zadig believes that the focus of cybersecurity professionals should be about changing behaviour.

“You’re getting people to do something that ultimately introduces friction and is sort of counter to what they naturally want to do,” he said.

For this reason, Zadig said Yahoo tries to find talent that’s atypical. “A lot of security people come from computer science backgrounds or from law enforcement or military,” he said.

“But increasingly we’re trying to find people who bring different views and sort of a diverse perspective to the field because increasingly we’re trying to solve not technical problems but behavioural problems.”
