ACIA’s Oisín Lyons talks about how his background in mechanical engineering helped to lead him into the world of data science.

Oisín Lyons is head of data science at the Aon Centre for Innovation and Analytics (ACIA) in Dublin.

He came to this area from a background in mechanical engineering, and recently told Siliconrepublic.com how he realised that data science could be a strong career fit for him.

“The techniques I was using to even extract [engineering experiment] data and process it before I could even analyse it were heavily computational and really data science focused,” he said.

“To me, engineering is obviously a very technical, mathematical degree but its main purpose is problem-solving.”
