Communications expert Thaler Pekar wants us to ask for stories and really listen to them.

Thaler Pekar is an expert in listening and helping other people tell stories effectively. She spoke to Inspirefest 2018 attendees about how she approaches stories in a unique way.

According to Pekar, we need to listen to stories without the added baggage of our own personal viewpoints. “If we assume nothing, then perhaps we can learn something.”

While it may be tempting to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, this can often lead to projecting your own beliefs and experiences on to the other person’s story, instead of allowing them to make meaning on their own.

Pekar asked the crowd to make a habit of “gentle enquiry” in order to “elevate the unknown in people” and learn from one another.
