Next NDRC Startup Weekend in October

30 Aug 2010

Dublin Startup Weekend aims to provide a platform for people who are interested in building companies around web and/or mobile applications to produce working systems over a weekend.

Following the success of the first-ever NDRC Startup Weekend in May of this year, the second NDRC Startup Weekend will take place from Friday 1 October to Sunday 3 October.

This intense 54-hour event brings people with great ideas for web or mobile apps together to develop them from concepts to operational, launch-ready systems over the weekend. The participants, who range from a mix of developers, designers, innovators and entrepreneurs, will have the opportunity to build a support community and to work together in a dedicated location to take their ideas and create real, new commercial ventures.

This event takes place with support from Microsoft (premier sponsor), Dublin City Enterprise Board and Mason, Hayes and Curran.

Startup Weekend

During the course of Startup Weekend, people pitch their ideas, form teams, network and strive to transform their concepts into real technology spin-outs.

Ben Hurley, CEO, NDRC, said “The event offers any entrepreneur who has a good mobile or web app idea the expertise and support that they need to bring that idea to a commercial platform. The atmosphere at Start-up Weekend in May was intensive but supportive and positive. It was amazing to see people working together to achieve so much in 54 hours!”

Enda Flynn, developer and Platform Group marketing manager from Microsoft, said: “At Microsoft we hold massive appreciation for the innovation coming out of the Irish start-up community and we run programs like BizSpark, to help technology startups get access to Microsoft tools that will accelerate the growth of their company. Having been part of the inaugural Dublin Startup Weekend back in May, we are delighted to see that NDRC have managed to secure a return visit so soon. We look forward to seeing all the creative pitches on day one and how far the ideas can come by the close of the weekend.”

The winner of the first Startup Weekend was GeoDealio, a mobile location-based service to provide users with deals offered by nearby cafes, bars and restaurants – a specialised web app that will soon be released on the App Store for the iPhone.

GeoDealio, along with two other Startup Weekend participants – CauseHere and BragBet – has gone on to receive investment and a place on NDRC’s LaunchPad accelerator programme.

CauseHere is a web-based service which enables people to gather around causes, find volunteers and organise fundraising, while BragBet is a web-based service which integrates social networking and betting platforms to enable a group of friends to form a betting pool and share control over it.

In operation since 2007 and headquartered in Seattle, Startup Weekend has already had success in over 52 cities and 12 countries.
