David Stewart 1960-2006

13 Oct 2006

A good friend and colleague David Stewart sadly passed away last Wednesday night, having succumbed to a long illness. He was a regular on the Irish technology journalism scene for the past number of years.

David had a keen grasp of technology and was well known and liked among the small group of journalists who regularly cover the industry in Ireland. His byline was a constant feature across a range of publications: siliconrepublic.com, Digital Ireland, eThursday and Knowledge Ireland, as well as ComputerScope, PC Live!, the Sunday Business Post and Irish Medical Times.

He will be remembered for a steadfast devotion to all things Apple and Macintosh — he owned an iPod long before they became a fashion item — as well as a neat line in over-the-top waistcoats which he wore for special occasions. A member of Mensa, David was also a keen science fiction buff who attended conventions regularly and was a jazz aficionado.

Recently David was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus, which he bore bravely and with his characteristic good humour, telling editors that he would be back writing before long and not to forget him — not that there was any chance of that. On finishing a freelance contract at ComputerScope some years back, his parting shot to colleagues was totally in character: “Wherever there is a press event with a free buffet, there shall ye find me,” he quipped.

David is survived by his parents Ann and Terry and by two brothers, Niall and Brian. His funeral service will be held on Monday 16 October after 10 o’clock Mass in the Church of the Sacred Heart Donnybrook, then to Mount Jerome Crematorium. The family has requested family flowers only. Donations can be made if desired to Irish Cancer Society.

May he rest in peace.
