General Motors (GM) has announced it is recalling 1.3 million of its compact cars in North America over a power-steering problem that has been linked with 14 crashes and one injury.
The recall covers the 2005-2010 model year Chevrolet Cobalt and 2007-2010 Pontiac G5 in the US; the 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit sold in Canada; and the 2005-2006 Pontiac G4 sold in Mexico, GM said in a statement.
GM said that cars affected by the problem can be “safely controlled” but may need greater steering efforts when travelling at less than 24 kmph. Drivers will also be alerted with a warning light and a chime if the power-steering fails in their vehicle.
The US car maker said it had told the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the voluntary recall yesterday after it had concluded its own investigation, which it began in 2009.
GM said it was preparing a fix for the problem and that it would notify customers when it has readied its plan.
