Twitter shake-up – COO Ali Rowghani to fly the nest

12 Jun 2014

As part of a management shake-up at social media giant Twitter, the company’s chief operating officer Ali Rowghani has announced via a tweet that he is stepping down from the role.

In the past half hour Rowghani tweeted: “Goodbye Twitter. It’s been an amazing ride, and I will cherish the memories.”

It emerged overnight that Twitter was undergoing a major re-evaluation of its top management.

Kara Swisher of Re/Code reported this could mean a possible shift in the duties of Rowghani, considered until now one of Twitter’s most valuable assets.

It is understood that Twitter’s product vice-president reported directly to CEO Dick Costolo rather than Rowghani.

The move comes amidst a tough time for Twitter, which is anxious to grow its user base to meet investor expectations of the now publicly quoted company.

Rowghani had been tasked with overseeing Twitter’s products and attracting more users to the platform.

Rowghani joined Twitter from Pixar, where he had been the company’s chief financial officer.

In a regulatory filing, Twitter confirmed Rowghani’s departure, but contrary to Rowghani’s tweet said he will remain as a strategic adviser to the CEO.

“Effective today, Ali Rowghani has resigned from his position as the chief operating officer (‘COO’) of Twitter, Inc. (‘Twitter’). Mr Rowghani will continue to be a Twitter employee and act as a strategic adviser to the CEO. Twitter does not intend to hire a replacement for the COO role, and all of Mr Rowghani’s operating responsibilities will be assumed by other members of the Twitter management team.”
