Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh, UCD Business Schools

Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh has been appointed professor of accounting at UCD Business Schools. In his new role, he will be responsible for enhancing the accounting research programme at faculty and doctoral levels at UCD Quinn School and UCD Smurfit School. Ó hÓgartaigh joins from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. He previously taught at graduate and executive levels in Ireland, the US and France. He chaired the Audit Committee of the Department of Marine, Communications & Natural Resources between 2003 and 2006. In 2004, Ó hÓgartaigh led one of the research teams which reported to the Commission on Electronic Voting. He has also led executive and professional education programmes for the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland, Dolmen Securities, Irish Life plc, AIB and the Revenue Commissioners. Ó hÓgartaigh is a first-class honours BComm graduate from NUI Galway and holds a PhD in accounting from University of Leeds. He is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland and the American Accounting Association Doctoral Consortium. He was a Fulbright fellow of Northeastern University in Boston in 2000-2001. He has published widely in international journals on the framing of accounting disclosures and in accounting history and has served as an expert witness in financial reporting in several leading tax cases.
