Facebook has confirmed its network was hit by technical difficulties today. Users across Europe, including the UK and Ireland, complained of being unable to access the site.

The company said the issues have now been resolved.

“Today we experienced technical difficulties causing the site to be unavailable for a number of users in Europe,” a spokesperson told Siliconrepublic.com.

“The issue has been resolved and everyone should now have access to Facebook. We apologise for any inconvenience,” she said.

Facebook has more than 850m users worldwide and is on a trajectory to hit its first 1bn users by August this year.

The company is planning a US$5bn IPO in May.
