NASA astronaut Scott Kelly’s return from the International Space Station (ISS) is only hours away, so here are some of the best moments that he shared with us back on Earth during his year in space.

Kelly is about to disembark from the ISS, after spending close to a full year onboard, alongside Roscosmos cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko. Thankfully for us, he has been relentlessly active on social media throughout.

Spending a year in outer space, presumably, got repetitive. However, notable distractions like conversations with US president Barack Obama, special screenings of The Martian, Christmas-themed supply ships and amazing geographical photographs clearly made the mission far more enjoyable for Kelly.

Following in the footsteps of Chris Hadfield, the Canadian astronaut delighted his thousands of social media followers with photos and videos from space. Kelly has supplied us with amazing shots of an almost entirely blacked-out North Korea, snowstorms battering the US and even colourful flowers a world away.

So here, in no particular order, – but for a fine opener, and equally cool closer – are some of Kelly’s best bits from space:
