SMT has received numerous awards for its breakthrough innovations and quality, which have led to thinner and more flexible drug-eluting stents, with good long-term clinical results.
Core strengths in R&D
The Galway investment is supported by the Department of Jobs and IDA Ireland.
“We were pioneers among Indian medical device companies to identify tremendous value in investing in R&D,” said Gaurav Gel, SMT’s Western European head.
“Our core strength lies in our ability to excel in developing technologically complex products through focused teams.
“With this centre, we hope to tap into the excellent talent pool available in Galway to make further enhancements in existing products and to develop new and innovative products.”
Established in 1998, SMT became the first indigenous player in India to successfully launch coronary stent.
As India’s largest stent manufacturing company, it employs over 400 people.
“The decision by SMT to choose Galway as its European headquarters and create 50 jobs is a further vote of confidence in the city and county which has deservedly earned a reputation as a medical technologies hub,” said Jobs Minister Mary Mitchell O’Connor, TD.
“Companies such as SMT, which are pioneers in their fields, are attracted to Galway and the west for many reasons, not least the strong, vibrant and varied research being undertaken at our local higher education institutions.”
