The art of surveillance (photos)

A flock of CCTV cameras

Czech artist Jakub Geltner has taken tools of surveillance and converted them into almost natural-looking parts of the environment, like a flock of seagulls sitting on rocks.

In a number of art installations entitled Nest 01, 02, 03, 04 and 05, Geltner has perfected the use of old CCTV cameras and satellite dishes and has made them look like a natural part of the environment, like birds on rocks or barnacles on boats.

For example, in his fifth installation in Aarhus in Denmark, he has made CCTV cameras look like natural parts of the coastline.

His efforts won him a prize at Denmark’s biggest art event Sculpture by the Sea. As part of the Sculpture by the Sea Australia Invitation Prize, Geltner receives an invitation to exhibit at Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi, receiving 25,000 Danish kroner towards the costs of exhibiting and a return plane ticket for Australia.
