Tesla is to diversify its product range away from cars for the first time after Elon Musk confirmed a new product will be launched by the company on 30 April, believed to be a home battery.
The assumption that it could be a battery where a home’s energy could be stored in a large battery, equivalent to a fuel tank for a home, comes following the confirmation last February by the company that they were looking at the technology.
The potential of this has far reaching effects if home renewable energy generation is to become a future reality as until now, any renewable energy generated at the home needs to be used at that time or it is effectively lost forever.

With a home battery, this energy could be stored for future use or during times when the wider power supply is down as well as one day contributing to a wider, smarter power grid of inter-connected power-generating homes.
In the meantime however, there remains scant confirmation of Elon Musk and Tesla’s plans with Musk himself only tweeting of the company’s intentions to hold a press conference at 8pm Pacific Time (5am UTC, 1 May).
There could also be the possibility that it is an entirely new and never-before seen concept, which will no doubt send the internet into a frenzy.
