Midas Ireland, the industry-led organisation for the microelectronics industry, has launched an engineering competition for third-level students in Ireland to submit projects around microelectronic design and development.
The competition has been launched as part of Microelectronics Week, which started yesterday.
With Midas Ireland predicting that the microelectronics sector could create up to 1,300 jobs by 2015 in Ireland, the competition is open to undergraduate students who are studying electrical, electronic or microelectronic engineering.
To enter the competition, students need to submit a design and development project with a microelectronics or electronics hardware base. The winning project will get €1,000 to go towards their college fees and the opportunity to meet with the judging panel for mentoring advice around a career in the sector.
John Blake, the chairman of Midas Ireland, said today that cultivating the next generation of engineering talent will be fundamental to the future success of the microelectronics sector in Ireland.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for engineering students to display their skills and talents in their future profession,” he said.
As well as completing their entry form, students are also being asked to submit a poster outlining their project. The closing date for entries is 12 April 2013.
