Google's recent US$199 Nexus 7 tablet device

Google and Samsung are reportedly planning to unveil a new 10.1-inch tablet computer targeted at the high end of the market and which may have a higher pixel density than Apple’s latest iPad.

The companies are planning a 2,560 x 1,600 display with pixels per inch (PPI) of 299, higher than the Retina’s 264 PPI on the new iPad.

According to CNET, the Android device will be aimed at the higher end of the market, in contrast with the 7-inch Nexus 7 which costs US$199 and a US$99 tablet Google is rumoured to have in the works.

Samsung already produces the Galaxy Nexus smartphone in partnership with Google.

The report cites NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim, who is basing his analysis on indications coming from supply chain sources.

Production of a low-end US$99 tablet is expected to begin in December.
