Facebook to launch official iPad app soon?

17 Jun 2011

Facebook is reportedly planning to release an official iPad app in the coming weeks, with overhauled features designed for the touchscreen tablet.

According to The New York Times, sources have said the app has been in production for more than a year and is now in the final stages of testing. Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is said to be overseeing the project.

The app has been carefully designed with the iPad’s touchscreen interface in mind. Facebook Chat and Groups have been reworked and the app will let users take photos from their iPads and upload them to their profiles.

While Facebook released an iPhone app in 2008 alongside the launch of the Apple App Store, it hasn’t released an iPad app yet, in spite of the fact it has been more than a year since the tablet’s launch.

Other developers have benefited from this, creating popular third-party Facebook apps from the iPad. However, Facebook could regain some of that audience with the launch of an official app.
