Co Louth is the most active Irish county on Twitter, suggests a recent survey that has broken down Ireland’s use of the microblogging site.

Commissioned by Eightytwenty and Bank of Ireland, the survey measured all Irish tweets that mentioned their location and found that Louth was almost six times more active than the least-active users, Longford, by getting a percentage figure of Twitter users compared with the county’s population.

Louth users were found to have sent 6,688 tweets for every thousand people, followed by Waterford (5,096 tweets) and Monaghan (4,530 tweets) making up the top 3.

Six of the top 10 counties in the list are from the east of the country, with the west and Midlands showing the lowest Twitter activity.

The counties with the least amount of Twitter activity are Cavan (2,077 tweets), Limerick (1,960 tweets), Kerry (1,924 tweets), Westmeath (1,903), Clare (1,706 tweets) and Longford (1,128 tweets).
