Spotify is planning a free streaming service for mobile devices

6 Dec 2013

Spotify is understood to be planning a free ad-supported version of its streaming-music service for mobile devices.

Up until now, the free version of Spotify was only available for personal computers and users would listen to ads in return for being able to access the service for free. Paying subscribers don’t need to listen to the ads.

Spotify has more than 20m users, out of which 6m are paying subscribers.

Users who pay the US$10 a month subscription have access to a music library of more than 20m songs.

However, according The Wall Street Journal the Sweden-based service has reached licensing deals with three of the world’s biggest music publishers to enable it to bring ad-supported, free music to mobile devices.
