Sony PlayStation gamers have been frustrated for four days now by a major outage that appears to have been caused by a distributed denial-of-service attack.
The outage affects PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable gamers who want to log on to play multiplayer games and update game scores.
It also affects users who want to download movies, TV shows and games over the web onto their PlayStations.
This message was posted on the official PlayStation website: “We sincerely regret that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have been suspended, and we are working around the clock to bring them both back online.
“Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.
“We thank you for your patience to date and ask for a little more while we move towards completion of this project. We will continue to give you updates as they become available,” Sony said.
Was Anonymous involved in this attack?
There is speculation that hackers have launched a DDOS attack on Sony’s network.
In recent weeks, hacker group Anonymous took down several Sony websites in a DDOS in response to Sony’s legal battle with a user known as GeoHot over allegedly jailbreaking his PlayStation 3.
