Why was Thor not in Captain America: Civil War?

29 Aug 2016

One of the great mysteries of our time was solved over the weekend, when a video surfaced showing just what Thor got up to while his friends were busy in Captain America: Civil War.

The Marvel universe in 2016 began with a bang, Captain America: Civil War bringing most of our favourite characters back onto the big screen for another battle of good vs evil.

Alongside the title character (played by Chris Evans), other Avengers alumni featuring in the film included Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jnr), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), War Machine (Don Cheadle) and Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olsen).

Who was missing, though, was almost as apparent as who was present. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) was notable by his absence, as was Thor (Chris Hemsworth). Many thought this was because the duo was instead to feature prominently in the Thor storylines of next year, though it has now emerged something quite different was afoot.

Thor was actually in Australia, with no mobile phone to be contacted on, and very little to do with his time. Banner, meanwhile, wouldn’t work on Captain America: Civil War “for all the money in the world”.

Marvel screenwriters have already revealed the true reason behind the duo’s absence from the blockbuster movie. They’re too powerful.

“You put those guys in a fight, it’s over quickly,” said Christopher Markus, a screenwriter on Civil War. “It’s like, ‘Well, we have the Hulk on our side.’ Oh, fine, then.”

“Yeah, I guess we should just call this off,” added co-writer Stephen McFeely.

“You’ve got to kind of choose your roster depending on what kind of fight you want to have,” said Markus.

Next year, both Thor and Banner are expected to be the two main protagonists in Thor: Ragnarok, 2017’s Marvel masterpiece.
