An overview of the week in deals in the Irish technology sector.
Bord Gáis acquires 20pc stake in wave energy company
Bord Gáis has acquired a 20pc stake in Irish wave energy company Tonn Energy in a bid to further develop its renewable energy portfolio.
Bord Gais will acquire 20pc of Tonn Energy as part of the deal and will see the energy company working close with Vattenfall – producer of wind farms in Germany and the UK – towards the development of full-scale wave farms in Ireland.
The acquisition of Tonn Energy signals a further effort on behalf of Bord Gáis to diversify its energy portfolio and CEO of Bord Gáis, John Mullins, believes that focusing on wave energy is practical, considering the natural energy resources on the west coast of Ireland.
Dediserve buys NI hosting firm – €1m revenues predicted
Fast-growing cloud computing firm Dediserve has acquired web-hosting provider AventureHost as part of plans to expand into the UK market.
The acquisition is predicted to bring Dediserve’s annual revenue to €1m by 2011.
Based in central Belfast, AventureHost is the second-largest web-hosting firm in the North with a reputation for delivering a high-quality service backed by first-rate customer support.
Dediserve’s managing director Aidan McCarron says the acquisition will give his company an instant physical presence in the Northern Irish market and will deliver economies of scale as AventureHost’s infrastructure and customers are migrated over to Dediserve’s cloud platform. He adds it will also provide a significant springboard to the wider UK market.
The founder of AventureHost Richard Kennedy adds that the newly merged firm will be well positioned to expand in the NI market.
