Some 47 more tech job losses for Cork

20 May 2008

In the wake of the 138 jobs lost at Hormann Electronics in Cork last week when the plant closed after 30 years in operation, 47 fresh jobs have been lost at Freescale Semiconductors, another technology company closing its doors after a decade in Cork.

The 47-strong staff at Freescale were informed yesterday of plans for the Cork facility to close, possibly by September, and were told the company would undergo a 30-day consultation period as the organisation decides what will happen to the plant.

Meanwhile it is understood that all 47 jobs, which are in the design sector, will be outsourced to the firm’s headquarters in Texas.

The US-based Freescale originally started off its life in Cork as a section of Motorola, before it became an independent spin-off company in 2004.
