Some 850,000 new Android devices are activated globally each day, which represents a year-on-year growth of more than 250pc, said Google’s senior vice-president of Mobile and Digital Content Andy Rubin.

There are now more than 300m Android devices across the globe in total, according to Rubin.

The figure was announced as this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Last year, there were 150,000 apps on the Android Market and this year it has increased to more than 450,000 apps.

The figures represent a huge success for Google as the operating system has made a major impact on the mobile market, particularly as the popularity of smartphones has risen.

According to Gartner research, Android was the leading smartphone operating system in quarter four of 2011, with 50.9pc of the market share of smartphones sold during that period. However, this fell slightly from 53pc from the previous quarter, which was attributed to the launch of the iPhone 4S.
