Leaving Cert student launches iOS exam paper app for fellow students

Cork Leaving Cert student and CoderDojo member Dylan Varian has published an app on the Apple App Store that provides Leaving and Junior Cert students and their teachers with access to exam papers and marking schemes on their iOS device of choice.

Varian came to our attention last year when he and fellow coder Dale O’Shea started their own software company Dharma Software at the National Software Centre in Cork.

Varian created the new Examie app with another pal, Shane O’Sulivan.

“I had the idea because this is something I need myself,” said Varian, who this week completed his mock exams ahead of the main event in June.

The app costs €3.59 in the Apple App Store.

“The idea is to make it quick and easy to access the exam paper that typically cost €5 or €6 each. But this app lets them get the exam papers plus the marking schemes onto their iPhones or iPads.”

Varian said he plans to launch an Android version of the app in the coming months.

“My main aim with this app is to cut costs for students drastically, as I know from experience that it can be hard for families to come up with this money every year.

“Also my aim is to encourage teachers to use technology in the classroom.”

Varian already got a surreal taste of success for his endeavour when a teacher supervising his mock exams tapped him on the shoulder and said: “Are you the guy responsible for that app?”
