These 8 companies are all great places to start a software development career

8 Oct 2018

Software reigns supreme in this technology-driven age, and so software development promises to be a rewarding and challenging career. These companies are all hiring in this area right now.

Our existence is increasingly become a digital one, and so software could be described as one of the building blocks of our world. In turn, those working in software development are building the next stage in society.

If you’re looking to start your career in this booming industry, these are some of the most forward-thinking companies hiring software developers right now.

Oath

Digital communications giant Oath (formerly known as AOL) is behind some of the most famous online brands around including Tumblr, Yahoo, TechCrunch and HuffPost. All of these media sites have software demands that are constantly evolving so, as you can expect, it is hiring for a broad variety of software development roles.

Fidelity Investments

Financial services firm Fidelity Investments can offer prospective applicants a number of different technology career paths. As well as working in the areas of software engineering, data science and cybersecurity, it also dips into emerging technologies such as blockchain, AI and machine learning. It has open positions in software development.

Pramerica

Pramerica is a subsidiary of Prudential Financial, a US-headquartered insurance company. In October 2017, it opened a new €42m 130,000 sq ft state-of-the-art campus in Letterkenny, Co Donegal. Many of the firm’s numerous software development positions are based at this office, which has been dubbed ‘The Rock’.

Neueda Technologies

Earlier this year, Belfast-headquartered IT firm Neueda Technologies announced plans to open a new base in Athlone, creating 200 jobs in the process. The company, which provides IT consultancy and training to a variety of organisations, is seeking software developers.

Jaguar Land Rover

British car brand Jaguar Land Rover has a huge stake in Ireland. It opened a new global hub for software engineering, architecture and development in Shannon, Co Clare earlier this year.

Keen to transition out of solely producing luxury vehicles, the company has set its sights on rising to the top in the race to create the best autonomous vehicles and advanced electric vehicles around. To navigate such a complicated road, the company needs software developers willing and able to tackle the unique challenges that this technology brings.

Liberty IT

Liberty IT is the technology arm of parent company Liberty Mutual Insurance. Its role within this wider framework is to support the enterprise demands of Liberty Mutual and create software to attend to these needs. As such, it needs a qualified team of software developers to help achieve this aim and is taking on recruits in its offices around Ireland right now.

Accenture

Professional services firm Accenture has a number of offices dotted around Dublin, but its premises at Hanover Quay, The Dock, is distinguished from the rest because it is also an R&D centre. Accenture aims to be one of the architects of the future, and it is seeking applicants for software development positions in service of this aim.

Mastercard

Payments giant Mastercard has responded to the disruption inspired in the fintech sector in the best way possible: by ensuring it is always ahead of the curve in terms of innovation. We heard from Ajay Bhalla last year about how Mastercard leverages AI in its fraud detection services. However, this isn’t the only innovation area Mastercard is excelling in – it has also been lauded for its ‘returnship’ programme and generous paternity leave plan. It is currently recruiting software developers.
