A wide and varied array of websites have been short-listed for the Golden Spider 2007 Awards, which will take place on 22 November at Dublin’s Burlington Hotel.

The newly designed http://www.independent.ie and http://www.rte.ie websites are among those short-listed in the Best News and Digital Media category while http://www.ncb.ie and http://www.rabodirect.ie have been short-listed in the Best Financial Services Website category.

Other categories include Best Travel and Tourism Website, Best Sports and Leisure Website, Best E-business Website and Best Public Sector Websites.

In all there are over 22 categories, including a Grand Prix category and Internet Hero Award. For a full list of this years nominees go to http://www.goldenspiders.ie

“Once again the volume and standard of entries is phenomenal and without doubt reflects the growing quality and diversity of the digital environment in Ireland,” explained Cathal Magee, the chairman of the judging panel and managing director of Eircom Retail.

“The wealth of expertise and talent in the Irish Internet Industry is huge and the competition was very strong in every category,” Magee continued.

“The judging panel is particularly pleased at the strength of the entry level for some of the newer categories like social networking and blogging. This year, in addition to the judges’ vote, we are going to canvass opinion from the general public on these two award categories.

“This is being conducted through the Golden Spiders website, and will be promoted with a click through to that site from the Eircom site http://www.eircom.net. The public vote results will be kept separate and will provide an interesting insight into what the Irish internet audience and users of these sites think,” Magee added.
