US space agency NASA has joined forces with toy maker Mattel to unleash ‘Mars Explorer Barbie’, an astronaut version of the iconic doll.

Now available on Mattel’s online shop for US$12.99, Mars Explorer Barbie had its official launch on Monday, to coincide with NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity’s first anniversary on the red planet.

“Mars Explorer Barbie doll inspires girls to be adventurous and to always reach for the stars!” Mattel said in a statement.

Mars Explorer Barbie joins Mattel’s ‘I Can Be’ range of Barbie dolls, which feature Barbie dolls in various careers. In past lives, Barbie has been a doctor, veterinarian, computer engineer and NASCAR driver, among other professions.

The new astronaut doll sports a pink and white spacesuit with pink reflective accents, pink space boots, and comes with a pink helmet and pink space pack – demonstrating that’s it perfectly OK to have a kick-a** career and be girly at the same time.
