Google demotes Chrome in ‘browser’ searches

4 Jan 2012

Funny that, Google has moved to ensure that searches for ‘browser’ no longer bring up the Google Chrome page after a storm of criticism when it emerged the search giant had broken its own Ts and Cs when it came to promoting products.

Yesterday it emerged that a campaign was rolled out on Google to promote its Chrome web browser for business.

Google forbids the practice of using paid links to influence search rankings. The campaign was first discovered by SEOBook’s Aaron Wall.

According to Searchengineland, Google has already moved to correct the issue and said its spam-fighting team was going to reduce the page rank value of Google Chrome homepage.

“While Google did not authorise this campaign, and we can find no remaining violations of our webmaster guidelines, we believe Google should be held to a higher standard, so we have taken stricter action than we would against a typical site,” Google stated.
