Premier League goals coming to Twitter for 2016/2017 season

27 Jul 2016

Football fans on Twitter will no longer need to hunt for clips hosted on individual accounts as Sky Sports announces a deal with Twitter to post real-time Premier League goals on its @SkyFootball handle.

Premier League goal clips on Twitter has been a long-contested issue for the top English football league with accounts hosting videos illegally facing regular deletion.

The issue being that broadcasters like Sky and BT pay a premium price for access to video coverage and footage of the Premier League – over £5bn in 2015 – and people sharing this content for free on Twitter, Facebook and Vine takes away from their business.

Now, however, Sky Sports has agreed a deal with Twitter to help end the copyright issue, allowing Irish and UK Twitter users who follow the @SkyFootball account to watch real-time video clips on their mobile devices.

Irish users get added bonus

Starting from the upcoming Premier League season, users will be able to see a selection of the key goals and moments from every Premier League game broadcast during the season as well as post-match analysis.

As an added bonus for Irish users, we will be able to see clips from games broadcast at 3pm on a Saturday, unlike in the UK where established broadcasting rules prohibit broadcasts in the country at that time.

The clips will be made available through Twitter Amplify, the social network’s effort to connect with publishers, media companies and advertisers to host content.

Sky Sports also announced that it will offer an expanded service for customers who also use the Sky Sports Football Centre app, with additional clips and full highlights available on mobile.

David Gibbs, digital director of Sky Sports and Sky News, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Twitter to bring in-game clips to football fans across the UK and Ireland as part of our biggest-ever season of football.”
