Google is celebrating its 12th birthday today.
Its mission statement, developed in its inception, is “to organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”
The search engine service has grown exponentially in the last 12 years, expanding to Google Maps, Google News and Google Apps. During this time, it also acquired YouTube.
According to Hitwise, Google currently accounts for more than 70pc of all searches in the US.
The exact date of Google’s inception is somewhat unclear. It offers a news service that gathers news content globally.
Google has celebrated it previously on 7 September, and the Google.com domain was registered on 15 September.
To celebrate, Google’s logo has been changed to an image of a cake, made by American painter Wayne Thiebauld.
