Supermoon snaps light up Twitter feeds

11 Aug 2014

Last night’s supermoon, the time when the moon is closest to the Earth, caught the eye of the world and photographers got some incredible shots of the moon as it filled the night’s sky.

Although three supermoons are scheduled to appear during this year, August’s event is technically the closest of the year, as the moon sat just 354,157km from Earth.

The celestial event appeared to catch the attention of the world. For once, the daily appearance of boy band hashtags on Twitter were temporarily replaced by #supermoon, as expert photographers and not-so-expert photographers posted loads of photos of their supermoon moment online.

For those who may have missed the supermoon, there is still a chance to capture another celestial wonder, the Perseid meteor shower. One of the year’s stargazing highlights, the shower will continue until 13 August and should be visible from most locations across Ireland (weather permitting).

Here are some of the best, and funniest, photos of the supermoon we came across on Twitter.
